How to Care for Orchids

Light

Provide moderate to bright, indirect light. Early morning direct sunlight, such as light from an east-facing window, is ideal. A west-facing window can also work, provided the orchid is protected from strong direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. Evening sun is generally acceptable. A south-facing window is suitable if the light is diffused or the orchid is placed away from direct sunlight. The foliage should be medium green, which generally indicates that the orchid is receiving enough light to support healthy growth and flowering.

Temperature & Air Movement

The optimal daytime temperature is 64-75°F (18-24°C). When temperatures rise as high as 98°F (37°C), provide less light and increase air movement to help prevent leaf sunburn and heat stress. Nighttime temperatures can range from 58-64°F (14-18°C). Fresh air and gentle air movement are important for healthy orchids.

Watering

Water your orchid in the morning. You can either water thoroughly from overhead or soak the potted orchid in a sink for approximately 5 minutes, then allow the excess water to drain completely. In colder areas, make sure the water temperature is not below 45°F (7°C), as very cold water can damage the plant. Water is an essential nutrient for healthy plant development, so maintain a consistent watering routine while allowing excess water to drain away.

Placement

Keep the orchid rack indoors in a bright location with no direct sunlight. Avoid placing orchids near doors or other areas where they may be exposed to sudden hot or cold drafts. Rapid temperature fluctuations can stress the plant and may cause bud drop.
